English Additional Language Tutors provide English language support to Newcomer clients who may or may not be currently enrolled in a LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) program. After receiving relevant training, they meet with the adult learners individually to help them improve their English Literacy skills

Required Qualifications

• Computer Skills (MS Word, Internet Explorer) • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent • Strong English Proficiency • Cultural Sensitivity

Position Responsibilities

• Complete Volunteer Application and provide a clear Criminal Record Check prior to commencing • Attend orientation and relevant training sessions provided by Newcomer Connections. (Introduction to Newcomer Connections/Cultural Competency.) • Work one-on-one with beginner level EAL (English as an Additional Language) students to provide literacy instruction. • Use relevant and appropriate resources for instruction. ( A guide of resources will be provided during training session) • Update the Volunteer Liaison on any issues in a timely manner. • Complete monthly progress reports using the framework provided and submit to the Community Volunteer Liaison, k.pierce@saintjohny.com on the first Monday of each month.
