Education & Literacy

Providing interpreting services between all Newcomers with very limited English proficiency, the YMCA Settlement Team and YMCA Volunteers. The interpreter can be either volunteer or contracted and help make communication easier so that Newcomers can better participate and understand their settlement process. Interpreters are coordinated by the Interpretation Team.

Required Qualifications

Suitable for residents of Saint John who speak Swahili, Somali, Dari, or Pashto along with English.

Position Responsibilities

Attend a training and orientation session for volunteers. Facilitate effective communication between families, the YMCA Settlement Team and the YMCA Volunteer Welcome Teams by interpreting between languages Attend various appointments and meetings with new families and act as interpreter Render information accurately, quickly, and clearly Be reliable and professional Provide GARs with any other relevant support to enhance their transition and settlement in Saint John
