READ Saint John
About READ Saint John:
For more than four decades, READ Saint John has been assisting adults to reach their individual literacy goals. We use the Laubach Literacy tutoring system to help leaners to learn to read and improve their literacy skills. Each learner is matched with a tutor, and through confidential one-on-one tutoring, they work together to reach the learners goals. We carry on this work with assistance from volunteers who donate their time toward developing and implementing lesson plans with their assigned learner. The majority of our learners are from the most vulnerable and marginalize populations which include; low income earners, persons with disabilities, survivors of domestic/gender based violence and seniors.
Our Mission:
READ SJ helps Greater Saint John-area adults improve their literacy skills by offering free, confidential, one-to-one tutoring, with individual programs tailored to the learner’s needs.
How You Can Support Us:
READ Saint John's literacy programs depend on volunteer tutors and we would encourage anyone who is looking for a rewarding way to give back to the community to consider tutoring!
What's involved in becoming a tutor?
You do not need to be a teacher, hold a degree or have previous experience. You will be given full training. If you are a good communicator and confident in your ability to empathize with adults with literacy difficulties then you can make a difference!
