Loch Lomond Villa: Digital Literacy for Seniors

About Loch Lomond Villa: Digital Literacy for Seniors:

The Loch Lomond Villa received funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program for a project aimed at supporting seniors during this time of social distancing and self-isolation through a digital literacy approach. The aim of the Digital Literacy for Seniors program is to enhance digital literacy among seniors in the community to ensure the accessibility of virtual tools that help to prevent loneliness and promote community connection. The program was piloted this summer with residents from the Loch Lomond Villa independent-living apartment buildings with great success. Feedback received from participants indicated that they felt better able to stay in contact with friends and family after taking this program and that the program helped to prevent loneliness. Providing opportunities for seniors to engage in the virtual world is always important, but now more than ever, is an essential piece in keeping people connected.

Our Mission:

The mission of the Digital Literacy for Seniors program is to ensure that nobody is left behind as a world becomes increasingly digital. The vision is a community in which all members have access to the support they need to improve their technology skills.

How You Can Support Us:

Individuals can become a volunteer technology mentor for our Digital Literacy for Seniors program. Volunteers will be matched with a senior who is looking to improve their digital skills. One-on-one help sessions will be scheduled with the participant to work on their technology goals. These sessions will be done in-person (with appropriate precautions) at the Wellness Centre, located in the independent-living apartment buildings that are attached to Loch Lomond Villa. The frequency of these sessions will depend on the volunteer's availability and learning goals of the participant (ex. weekly, bi-weekly, monthly). Time commitment will include watching a pre-recorded training session, participating in a short practice session, and the time spent working with your participant (this will vary but never be more than one hour a week).
